So on Monday I got so much harassment from coworkers here in the news room after I turned in my first five star book review for "Anonymous Vengeance", by Farrell Kingsley. After handing the rough draft to my editor, he took one look at the five stars and then another look at me. In fact, he was so surprised that I finally gave a book the highest possible rating; my editor had this review held off so he could read the book himself. Probably wanting to make sure I hadn’t taken up a new past time of taking non-prescription medication.
For two days afterwards, coworkers constantly wrote “Five Star Girl” and other such things on a whiteboard in my office teasing me. For those of you who have read my down to earth reviews, you know that after three years I have never given five stars to any piece of work. In fact, in the news room I hear more often than anything that I am the girl who will never give anything more than four and half stars. There is not a perfect piece of entertainment work out there. The graphics editor has always commented to me that making a website picture with five stars had just been a waste of her time. However, on Monday it all ended when I gave a book five whole stars.
It all started on Friday when I decided to hit up the talk shows after taking a day off at work here at Portland’s Local News Day. I turned on one of the more famous of the talk shows, And what do I see? Local author Farrell Kingsley who lives in Tigard, Oregon being interviewed for the Book Club as his book “Anonymous Vengeance” is making the rounds on talk shows nationwide.
“Bigger than Twilight? You Bet!” -- Frank McDougal, Editor and Chief of Portland Local News Day.
Wow, a local author is getting attention nationwide and is a virtual unknown here in his own local city. I better jump on this, I thought. I went online and bought the book from his website, www.AnonymousVengeance.com. A few minutes later I was reading the eBook which I purchased right online from the website.
The first chapter was kind of slow I thought to myself, but it established the foundation needed for the rest of the book. After reading chapter two I couldn’t put the book down. I was so in to this book I couldn’t sleep and I stayed up until 3 A.M. reading. At 7 A.M. on Saturday morning I was back up because I couldn’t sleep not knowing what was going to happen next. By Saturday evening I was done with the book. Without giving too much away, the book starts out by outlining the characters, including Robert Ralston who is a pacifist who seems to have the perfect life. He has a nice house, two kids, what appears to be a loving wife, a great job, and thinks his life is perfect. What he doesn’t know is secretly his wife Sharon has been having an affair with his boss named ‘Cal’ at work.
When Sharon becomes pregnant with Cal’s child, Cal fires Robert, and explains to Robert that his wife has left him. Cal also let’s Robert know that he has been left with empty bank accounts as well. Not only that, but just to rub the wound even more, Sharon and Cal have been embezzling all the money used to pay bills for the past four months. Leaving his house in foreclosure and the bank coming to reposes Robert’s car.
Robert is left with no money, no house, no job, no wife, no kids, no car, and a whole lot of vengeance.
This book has so many twists and turns and is a complex maze of non-stop action. Each event in the book played in to the next event like clockwork. And what Robert does to gain his vengeance is completely original. In fact I Googled everything Robert did one by one and found very few of the ideas on any website. Every item was well planned and seemed doable in a real life situation which is scary to think about. I was also surprised at how easily someone could be completely destroyed anonymously.
It’s a book with no sex and no vulgar language so it’s appropriate to all ages. I laughed in chapter 5, I cried in chapter 6, and I wanted to adopt Sharon and Robert’s kids myself in Chapter 8. You could feel the emotion that much. This book is a thriller, a romance, a comedy, and a horror story all in one with an absolute cliff hanger ending.
Many Portlander's feel the best piece of literary work to find its way out of Portland is Twilight which was filmed here in Portland. I now disagree and as I read this book I could picture the movie and foresee an “Anonymous Vengeance” movie even bigger than Twilight.
Anonymous Vengeance is not a single book; it is only the first in a series of books. I cannot wait for book two, "Anonymous Vengeance In The Second Degree" to be released in December. I highly recommend to anyone that the next book they read be this one. Oh, and my editor agrees, "5 Stars!". |
